  • Compact, lightweight, durable aluminum casing
  • AES 256-bit hardware encryption via Samsung Magician app
  • No cloud subscription needed
  • Available in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB sizes

Why Every Student Needs a Portable SSD

Your semester project. Your thesis. Four years of lecture recordings. Losing any of it because your laptop died is catastrophic. Cloud storage helps, but it’s slow to upload large files and costs money every month. A fast portable SSD is the physical safety net you need.

Speed

The Samsung T7 uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, which maxes out at 10Gbps. In practice you get sequential reads of ~1,050 MB/s and writes of ~1,000 MB/s — fast enough to transfer a 10GB video project in under 15 seconds.

For comparison, a typical USB-A flash drive tops out around 100 MB/s. The T7 is 10x faster.

Design

The T7 is palm-sized (85.1 × 57.3 × 8mm) and weighs just 58g. The brushed aluminum casing feels premium and survives drops up to 2 meters per Samsung’s testing. It comes in Indigo Blue, Beige, and Space Gray.

Storage & Price

  • 500GB: ~$55
  • 1TB: ~$80
  • 2TB: ~$130

For most students, 1TB is the sweet spot. You can hold the entirety of your coursework, a full backup of your laptop, and still have room for your Steam library.

Security

The Samsung Magician app lets you set an AES 256-bit hardware password for the drive. If someone steals it, your data stays locked. This is worth setting up — especially if you handle research data.

Verdict

At $80 for 1TB, the Samsung T7 is one of the best values in portable storage. Buy it before finals season, do a full backup of your laptop, and thank yourself later.
